Question on becoming a Doctor? difference between a Family & General Practitioner?

Ramon Dahlheimer: Oh and how long does it take to become a Family Practitioner? How many years?

Kandi Lough: A family practitioner may or may not be a doctor (for example, a Family Nurse Practitioner); but unless "Nurse" is specified, it's usually a doctor. Otherwise, they are the same thing.

Rayford Latz: A General Practitioner Doctor used to be a Doctor who didn't complete a postgraduate (specialty) education. But now, I guess no state gives any license to a general practitioner anymore only in rare circumstances (shortage of primary care Doctors). A Family Practitioner Doctor is a doctor who completed a postgraduate education (specialty) in Family Practice for three years. I guess those three years are the reassurance of general clinical practice, less lectures more contact with patients in different specialties. I think becoming a Family Practitioner is the best way to go since you get to see many patients, different gender, different ages, pregnant patient! s, etc. If you like diversity, this is your career pathway. You perform minor surgeries (vasectomies, skin biopsies), you will be a MD or DO depending where you got your graduate education. Please, see this website for more information:http://www.aafp.org/online/en/home.html...Show more
