You cannot use the words interchangeably, as you are trying to do, without warping the definition to suit your own purposes instead of the true meaning of the word. Atheism is the flat out rejection of any idea of a higher power (God or Gods). Much as you might want to, the only way you would be correct is if you redefine the word to change its intent. The definition provided by your teacher is absolutely correct. Agnosticism is simply a refusal to take a position on that argument since it is impossible to prove either way. Thus, if you were agnostic, you could not be atheist. If you believe in the absence of a deity, then you're taking a definitive position, which makes you an atheist, not agnostic. Likewise, refusing to take a position is NOT the same as asserting that there is no higher power, making the person agnostic, not ath! eist. Edit: Well researched, and I understand your point, so I'll probably have to concede the argument about atheism/theism preventing agnosticism.
